CHAPTER 23

Peggy broke the kiss and pulled back.

Clay’s hand dropped to his lap, his brows drawn together, confusion clear in his expression.

Her breath had seized entirely. As she struggled to take in air, she stared into the swirls of green that were Clay’s eyes, one pupil still slightly larger than the other. When was the last time Clay had kissed her like that? It had been over four years ago. His more recent kisses had been tentative or rife with tension.

This one. Goodness, this one. It was real. Brought back every nuance of their intimacy as a couple. Made her ache for what they’d had.

He thinks you’re his wife.

The flush of her deception rose up her neck, shouting her guilt. How could she do this? For someone who professed to love the Lord, she was such a fraud.

She backed up a few paces, put her hand to her lips, and felt the tingle still there, quickening the pace of her heart. He’d never forgive her once he figured out the truth. Yet, she knew once he remembered everything—and he was soon to do that—he would push her so far away she may as well live in Timbuktu.

Enjoy this short time with him then, the wrong voice shouted in her head.

The still, small voice of God tried to gain her attention from under the sin of deceit. He was there, a subtle pressure instead of the sledge hammer she needed right now.

“I—I’ll go get the doctor.”

Clay’s expression collapsed into hurt. He reached out his hand. Peggy tore her eyes away. He didn’t understand, but he would. Oh would he…

She stepped up to the nurse’s station on shaky legs. Pulling in a ragged breath, she waited until she knew her voice wouldn’t betray her. “Has Dr. Harris arrived yet?”

The pretty brunette who worked the weekend day shift looked up from her paperwork. “We finally reached him. He’s on his way.”

“While we wait, maybe you could give me some advice?”

The nurse set her pen down and gave Peggy her full attention. “I can try.”

“My…husband”—she hoped the doctor hadn’t told anyone different—“is in room 352, right down the hall. Clayton Cooper?”

“Of course. I know of his case.”

Peggy chewed her lip for a minute, trying to wait out the lump forming from her ongoing lie. “I just wondered. How much should I fill in when he doesn’t remember something? Should I be waiting for him to remember it naturally? Or tell him everything I happen to know?” All of a sudden she realized what a corner she’d just painted herself into. She hadn’t been around Clay or known of his activities for years now. How was she to fill in the gaps? She should just excuse herself and forget the whole idea.

“Oh, I can help you with that,” the nurse said. “It’s fine to fill in or show pictures, but we find family members will often overwhelm the patient. You might want to wait until he requests knowledge. For instance, instead of just rambling on
